Growing Up in the Inner City with a Disability

Tori

I would like to see more changes around Dublin.
Hi my name is Tori, I am 20 years old and I am attending the Transition Programme here in the CRC. I started the programme last September and am really enjoying it. I have been working on my Internet Skills for QQI Level 3 and I really wanted to start a blog. I came up with a list of topics with Megan. I wanted to post my blogs on the CRC Adults Website. I am very excited to share my topics. My first blog post is going to be about Growing Up in the Inner city with a Disability.

I live in Inner City Dublin, over the years it took a while to get my supports in place like my adaptions at home. As a wheelchair user living in Dublin city it is very hard to get out and about. There is always obstacles like cars parked on the street which makes it impossible to use my powerchair I have to use my push chair. There is always lumps and bumps in the paths that makes using my wheelchair around town very difficult. Its also very difficult to use public transport. I find the buses are not wide enough to use, the space is very tight, it only allows for one wheelchair which means I cant get a bus with my friends. It is also very hard to use a train. You can not plan ahead to get ramp access for the train which makes trying to plan a day out very difficult. I think the community needs to become more accessible. I think there should be more space on buses and ramp access available on trains.

Also I think for younger children with disabilities there should be wheelchair accessible playgrounds so children with disabilities could join in with other children. I think there needs to be more access in general for people with disabilities in their own communities but especially like big cities in Dublin. I would like to see more changes around Dublin.

I am currently on the advocacy committee as I am very passionate about change.
